What is it: SafeWatch program is a safety training program designed to help meet MSHA Part 46 requirements for training at surface mining operations.

  • Each Lesson Includes:

Lesson Plans - each lesson teaches why the safety topic is important, talks about hazards in the workplace, shows the correct way to be safe while on the job, checks for understanding, and establishes an action plan to make things safer.

Job Aids - each lesson includes 5 full color job aids demonstrating safe work practices. The safe work practice's photographs are of employees in actual aggregate operations. Employees may take a copy to look at during the lesson (each comes in a protector sheet).

Training Certificates - the program includes training certificates for MSHA documentation. The form enables employers to track attendance, time & topic of each training session.

Record Keeping Forms - the program includes forms to track individual progress within the program.

Overhead Transparencies - each lesson includes overhead transparencies of the discussion template, hazard situations, and job aid (color).

* This program was developed according to the most frequent fatalities (Lesson's 1-12), the most frequent citations (Lesson's 13-24), and MSHA refresher training requirements (Lesson's 25-48).

Why is it important? Learning potential safety hazards and using safe work pratices while working in the aggregates industry can help prevent serious injuies and perhaps save a life. SafeWatch Safety training can provide a path for positive employee communication leading to safe work habits and attitudes while at the same time complying with federal regulations.

How? The SafeWatch program is divided into single topic lessons, taught weekly and conducted all year at each location. Each lesson can be conducted in 30 minutes and requires minimal preparation time by your personnel. The entire work group is focused on the training topic of the week all week long. This helps to assure training topic retention.

When? The SafeWatch lesson is included as part or all of a safety meeting or a weekly training session. The short duration of each lesson helps increase retention and reduce time away from the job. The weekly sessions make safety a priority and help create a culture where safety is a “way of life.”

Where? SafeWatch Lessons can be taught in any work environment. This can be at safety meetings, tailgate sessions, break rooms, shop, etc.

Who? SafeWatch can be taught by any person within your organization. SafeWatch is an interactive teaching method involving all persons within the work group, helping to create a team approach to work place safety. Facilitators of the program typically increase their communications skills, knowledge of safe work practices and provides them tools for evaluating the effectiveness of instruction.
